Modern Drummer: Polyphia’s Brandon Burkhalter on Keeping Things Simple
“I wanted to share today one of the concepts I feel to be the most beneficial to all players (especially the younger ones, myself included) that I even still focus on to this day—keeping things simple with your playing.”
Album Review: “Muse” - Polyphia
When you write instrumental music, it’s instrumental that you understand one basic tenet of music: keep it interesting or memorable. Scale the Summit and Animals As Leaders are good examples of instrumental bands understanding that excluding a vocalist doesn’t give you a golden ticket to do whatever you want. The basic rules of music still apply. It’s possible to write catchy, groovy, and memorable music without any vocals. Dallas, TX-based group Polyphia not only understands this; they’re writing the textbook. The band’s debut LP, Muse, is such a pleasant listen, it’s difficult to fathom how well this works.

Metal Sucks: “Listen To Polyphia!”
Djent’s been boring for a while, and technical metal thus hasn’t been shaken up in quite some time. Enter Polyphia. This Texan crew plays blistering melodic metal, complete with thumping grooves and mind-boggling drum proficiency.
